Years ago, I was challenged by an art professor to paint on something we've never painted on. That was a challenge in itself as I had painted on fabric, metal, wood, traditional canvas, rock. I happened to be walking by a furniture store that had a hide rug. Of course I had to stop in and check it out. I found the texture on the tanned hide to be amazing and that I was going to have to paint it. That's the beginning of the direction of my current path as an artist. 

I only use ethically acquired tanned deer, goat, elk and moose hides. 

I wanted my paintings to feel like fine art and not a culturally appropriated style. I stretch the hides over canvas to give them extra support as the hides are thinner and more supple than those of a cow hide. The hides have imperfections which become part of the paintings character.

I also use arena sand in the paintings that have sand in them. It give authentic texture and adds to the memory of the painting.

Process:

• Consultation: We will have a nice social chat about what you are looking to see come to light. This is where I get the sense of your horse's personality through your connection.

• Reference Photos: I prefer to use mine. I take pictures with the specific goal of a painting. If you are providing pictures they have to be in large format (not facebook or text size). 300 dpi is preferred. A written release is also required from the photographer that took the photo releasing the image specifically to Paintbrush and Camera LLC. (This is a law).

• Sketch Approval: I will send a drawn out artistic sketch in charcoal for approval. This is the general idea and not a high detail drawing.

• Painting Process: paintings can take up to 100 hours to do depending. Please have patience.

• Final Delivery: paintings ship insured to you. Shipping charges depending on size and location. They are shipped in protective packaging.

All paintings can turn into packages. Packages include photoshoot by me and travel expenses.

Photoshoot within 350 driving miles from me is a flat rate of $150.

Photoshoot to take place over 350 miles away will be $.75/mile over 350 miles plus lodging.

Photoshoot that is located more that 700 miles will include airfare, car rental, and lodging.
